Master classes

I specialise in running master classes and workshops for galleries, brands, commercial and private events, and can tailor these for participants of all abilities. Whether for aspiring artists or enthusiasts looking to explore a particular medium, I can design the right experience for you. Below are some examples of the classrooms I have previously run.

BOTANICAL SOFT PASTEL

As part of their major exhibition on Brazil and the birth of Modernism, the Royal Academy of Arts partnered with Granado to host an event that explored the history of the company.

As part of this, I was asked to design a one day workshop on soft oil pastels for botanical drawing which would allow first-time users to explore the medium in a fun and informative way.

The beauty of soft pastels is their wonderfully vivid colours and textures. They have some of the richness of oil paint without its challenges and can be utilised in a free-form style that is ideal for both beginners and more expeirneced

A one-day workshop such as this can inspire participants and give them the tools they need to further explore the medium.

Marbling and bookbinding WORKSHOPS

I host regular workshops on suminagashi and traditional paper marbling at the beautiful Dulwich Picture Gallery in south London. Suminagashi, or “floating ink”, is an ancient Japanese marbling technique that entails floating ink on the surface of water and then transferring the patterns this creates directly onto paper.

In these workshops, participants will experiment with these techniques, before creating a final book with your own marbling designs to take home at the end of the class.

Details of upcoming workshops can be found on the Dulwich Picture Gallery website.

BOTANICAL WATERCOLOR

I also run workshops on botanical watercolour painting, a medium that is particularly close to my heart. Watercolour painting allows for precision but also lightness, delicate enough for intricate detailing but with a soft translucence perfect for layering colour. In a pre-photography age, botanical painting was a crucial part of recording the beauty of the natural world and it is from the wonderful works of naturalists like Maria Sibylla Merian that these images take their inspiration.

In these classes, participants learn how to employ watercolours to produce their own reflections of the botanical world.
